For those who don’t live in the South Wales area and in particular for those that don’t read the Glamorgan Gazette then here is the extract from last weeks edition ….
Mr Davies highlighted the achievements of Owen Dyckhoff, who gained four B grades at A level despite a severe hearing impairment.
Even more remarkably, he suffered from glandular fever during the examinations and had to be hospitalised!
He is now looking forward to continuing his education at Aberystwyth University.
Owen’s mother, Kathryn, said: “Owen has worked very hard and he has always said he wants to show that as someone who has hearing problems, he is at no disadvantage.
“Owen gained six A*s and five A grades at GCSE, the majority of which were for languages.
“For a deaf person to excel at languages is clearly remarkable.”

And to round all of this off – he’s even been offered an excellence bursary by the university which means he’s done remarkably well all round.
Owen got 4 x B’s in his A Levels and his mum and I are well pleased and so, so proud of him.
However, perfectionist that he is (and even allowing for his glandular fever and lack of work for his AS’s – everything is accumulative) he is disappointed because he wanted A’s all round.
As one of his mates put it … “don’t worry O, you started and finished with 4 whereas I started with 4 and ended with 1 and some only got a ½” … sort of puts it into perspective.
Well done Owen – I love you and am so proud of you.
… for Owen.
Today is the day that determines the start and shaping of his future. For today is the day his A Level results come out and based on them will be what university and what course he does.
He is a very clever and able child – I know all parents say and believe this, but we have results and statistics to back us up. At age 16 he did his GCSE’s (16 is the earliest age a child can opt to leave school in the UK) and for the part of the country we live in, he placed in the top 10 of students with those results. In his school only one person bettered his results and it’s no surprise that was a girl.
As some of you know and to cap it all – back in March he was hospitalised with glandular fever and is still suffering its effects now. So his results may not be those that were originally predicted
I am very proud of my eldest (and my other two) and he’s had a lot to fight for and against. It seems somehow appropriate that we named him Owen as it means “a youthful warrior” – so, if you remember then please do pray for him. God obviously has huge plans for him.
Oh, and as if he hasn’t done enough already, he wants to do a double honours in Physics and Computer Science.
