I’ve been asked about my pond so many times that I’ve decided to blog about it and then I can just say to folks – go look at my blog!.
The pictures don’t really do it justice for size as I don’t have a camera that does wider angles well. When the length, width and average depth are taken into consideration then the volume of water it holds is just short of 5,000 Gallons which equates to almost 20,000 Litres.

The Empty Pond
Two years ago I needed to empty the pond due to some major issues that have been there since the previous owner moved out. The biggest issue was in wondering what to do with 5,000 gallons of water … fortunately just over the garden wall is a road and a storm drain … so in it went!

Despite fixing the issues and re-filling it we also wanted to soften the harshness of the straight edges. So in the bottom left corner we built an in-pond rockery but the diagonally opposite corner we are still mulling over what to do with it. The decking gives it an easy maintenance route for getting round but it also makes the pond far too “stiff” when viewing. So at present we still haven’t replaced the decking down the left hand (garden) side yet as we plan to buy (scavenge) some nice rocks and plants to disguise the pond liner.
Also the gap in the fence is not an issue as there is a tree immediately on the other side which stops little ones gaining access. The fence (my first ever and my FIL was well impressed) was my first project in the new house to stop any youngsters from accessing the pond inadvertently.

Shot from Above.
This shot shows the pond in almost its full glory – well at least all the fish.
There are still plans to soften it more with other annual plants, etc, etc … but these all take time and money and experimentation. Unfortunately last year I had to add a net and lost approximately half my fish to a heron … no more.

our frog
When we were cleaning we also found this little fellow along with two buddies. I know that at least two of them survived the process as last year and this we have seen teh resultant frog spawn.
Last picture then – a close up of some of the fish and the two I love the most. They started off as tiny, being only 1″ longĀ and I was given them for Fathers Day two years back. This year they must be at least 12 to 14″ long. They are Ghost Koi and so called because it can be really hard to spot them even when the pond is as clear as mine is.
